Freud’s Wanderlust

22 March 2007 to 29 April 2007

This exhibition on Freud the traveller includes travel paraphernalia drawn from the archive, maps, prints, photographs, letters, post cards, books and objects collected by Freud on his travels.

Travel is dangerous and attractive. Freud’s urge to escape the restrictions of home life overcame fears of train crashes or cholera. He yearned for the south and summer holidays in Italy. But he also travelled as a researcher to France, to visit family in England and to lecture in the USA.

Reading his letters home, one realizes that his travels are a form of dream-work. They fulfill childhood wishes of discovery and conquest.
